What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the field of dentistry concerned with diagnosis, prevention and treatment of malocclusion. In other words it is straightening of the teeth. With the use of modern technology we can eliminate spaces, correct overlapping teeth, and move teeth into an improved position and help the way the teeth come together.

When should you have Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is making the best of your teeth and improving the harmony of your mouth and jaws. Age is not a barrier to treatment. At Barming Dental we have treated patients with orthodontics from age 8 to 70. Orthodontics is frequently done during teenage years, however, because of the discreet and effective nature of aligner treatments such as CFast and Inman Aligner, more and more adults are choosing to have treatment in order to enhance their appearance, dental health and improve their confidence.

  • Fast– You will have straight front teeth in about six months
  • Discreet– the wires and brackets are almost invisible
  • Affordable– the short treatment time dramatically cuts the cost

Cfast is a fast, simple, gentle, effective, minimally invasive and affordable treatment when adults wish to have their alignment issues corrected with the top and bottom front six teeth. Because we do not claim to address major orthodontic issues, Cfast can be done very quickly, making it more affordable than all other orthodontic options.

How does it work?

Cfast uses clear orthodontic brackets and tooth-coloured nickel-titanium wires. The treatment works much like that using clear aligners, but tooth movement is much more predictable and usually more than twice as quick.

The nickel-titanium wires put gentle pressure on the brackets to level and align the teeth with minimal discomfort to the patient. The gum follows this movement to achieve a fully aesthetic outcome.

Standard orthodontic mechanics are still involved with CFAST, but because it’s just the front teeth, the force required is minimal. The nickel-titanium wires exert mild pressure to force the teeth to move, and this is done without the need for severe tightening which causes the discomfort noted in conventional orthodontic treatments.

Inman Aligner

  • Efficient results
  • Safe and gentle alignment treatment
  • Quickly align teeth before veneer treatment
  • Removed and inserted as easily as a retainer

The Inman Aligner is a simple, removable appliance used to align front teeth quickly and safely. It is really efficient, very safe, great value and the perfect solution for crowding or protrusion of the front teeth and it is ideal as a stand-alone treatment or to pre-align teeth prior to further cosmetic options such as bonding or minimal veneers. Your front teeth can be gently guided to an ideal position in a matter of weeks. Most cases are complete in 6-18 weeks and because it’s removable you can take it out to fit with your lifestyle.

How does it work?

The Inman Aligner has Nickel Titanium coil springs that power two aligner bows that gently oppose each other, guiding the teeth into their new position. These gentle forces are active over a very large range of movement, which is why the Inman Aligner works so quickly.

Most cases are completed within 6-18 weeks.

For more complex cases where fast systems are not suitable, see FIXED BRACES.

Fixed Orthodontics

For more complex cases where fast systems are not suitable, fixed orthodontics may be an option.

  • Brings about various types of tooth movement
  • More precise tooth movement and detailing of occlusion is possible
  • Used to treat complicated malocclusion

Fixed appliances are probably the most common type of orthodontic appliances in use today. There are various types of fixed appliance systems available ranging from metal brackets to clear (aesthetically pleasing) brackets. They enable the orthodontic practitioner to accurately move the teeth into the desired position. The orthodontist has more control over the position of the teeth with fixed appliances than can be achieved with removable appliances or removable aligners.

How does it work?

Fixed appliances consist of small brackets that are attached onto the front surface of the teeth with a dental adhesive. The brackets are then connected with a thin wire which is often held in place with elastic (sometimes coloured) loops.

Orthodontic treatment usually lasts from 6 to 30 months depending upon the severity of the problem and the scope of the proposed treatment.

Once the active phase of the orthodontic treatment has been completed, the majority of patients are provided with retainers in order to maintain the finished result. Retainers can be removable or fixed onto the tongue-side of the teeth. Failure to wear or maintain retainers as instructed is likely to result in the teeth becoming more crooked and crowded as they try to move back to their pre-treatment position.

These aligners are virtually invisible and fit snugly over your teeth, shifting them slightly, moving them horizontally and vertically and even rotating them when needed.

Your aligners are engineered to use the right amount of force in the right place at the right time.

When you change to the next set of aligners, your teeth gradually move into position following a custom treatment plan mapped out by your dentist.

  • An average case takes about 12 months for adults, but the length of treatment depends on the severity of your case and can only be determined by your dentist.
  • Aligners are most effective when worn 20 to 22 hours per day and removed only for eating, brushing and flossing.
  • You will have regular appointments usually about once every four to six weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned.
